Coast run International Artists Workshops/Residencies, established after the earlier Cyfuniad Workshops in 1999 and 2001. Where the Cyfuniad Workshops had taken place within a rural setting, close to Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, Coast found a decidedly more urban location at the AFoundation contemporary arts venue, formerly a coach shed, knife factory and foundry in the re-development area of Liverpool.
These contrasting environments and contexts serve to influence participating artists very differently as well providing very contrasting formats and rhythms for the workshop daily environment. The distance between the living and working spaces for Coast ensures that artists have to negotiate their way, both geographically and socially, through what has been a cityscape undergoing massive change. Although the sites and contexts of the Coast and Cyfuniad Workshops have been in high contrast, the connecting principle remains the same; the creation of a space for artists to engage in dialogue and extend their practice.
