The Triangle Network Forum addresses some of the common challenges that independent art spaces and artist collectives are facing today, in different parts of the world. As a condensed series of talks and discussions, the public Forum introduces new voices and ideas to conversations that have been taking place internally to the Triangle Network over the last few years, as part of the PhD research of Rosie Hermon.

Key subjects explored include: thinking from a position of precarity, leadership and succession planning, operating under censorship, and maintenance – the on-going care for organisations and their structures.

This Forum has emerged from the doctoral research of Rosie Hermon enabled by the collaborative doctoral partnership established between Gasworks, the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image and the Curating Contemporary Art Programme at the Royal College of Art.

Triangle Network Forum Programme

Maintenance – How can we bring in programme funding when the walls of our institutions are crumbling?

Speakers: Sofia Steinvorth, Curator, Joe Legate, Artist & Candice Allison, Director, Bag Factory

Declaring in her Manifesto for Maintenance Art (1969) that "the culture confers lousy status on maintenance jobs = minimum wages, housewives = no pay" the artist Mierle Laderman Ukele asks, "after the revolution, who's going to pick up the garbage on Monday morning?" Taking these questions as a starting point, Many Hands Make Light Work, a curatorial maintenance project by Sofia Steinvorth, which was hosted at the Bag Factory between April and June this year, brings some of Ukele's issues into the sphere of small visual arts organisations and the Triangle Network. By asking: 'How can we bring in programme funding when the walls of our institutions are crumbling?' the conversation will revolve around the difficulties - not to say impossibilities - in raising funds for maintenance work and explore different strategies to attend to these shared necessities within the Network. 

Thinking from a Position of Precarity

How does thinking from a position of precarity shape our perspectives and our strategies? How do we negotiate our precarious positions, working with and against conditions of uncertainty?

This session presents a number of different artistic and organisational practices, and initiates a discussion about what thinking from a position of precarity means. Both in relation to the practices shared and the specific local arts and socio-political ecologies of the speakers: a curator based in Buenos Aires, an arts organisation based in Santiago and an artist collective who have been working responsively to the social uprising in Chile, based in Valparaíso.

Leadership and Succession Planning – How can we disentangle ourselves from our organisations, how can we leave?

How can those responsible for an organisation pass them on effectively, particularly when the organisational and the personal have become bound together in the figure of the founder? How can we think through processes of organisational transition, towards strengthening organisations? Following on from conversations on organisational stewardship held within the Triangle Network last year, Social Synergy Foundation share their work in supporting organisations through processes of succession planning. This includes working with Khoj International Artist Association.

Operating Under Censorship 

Speakers: Svetlana Mintcheva, Strategy Consultant and Jack Ky Tan, Artist

In starting to map different forms of censorship, as well as discussing specific examples within organisational and artistic practice, how can we better understand the subtleties around practices of censorship in different contexts, and its pervasive nature? How does censorship become naturalized? How might organisations self-censor in an unconscious way? Is there a ripple effect in these behaviours? How do local practices impact the international with regards to censorship? And how can artists and organisations address difficult subjects under these conditions? 

Triangle Network Plenary Discussion

This plenary will introduce the Triangle Network and some of the organisations within it. Through a round-table discussion, participants will reflect on the attempt to articulate challenges within the Network through the Forum – the opportunities and difficulties this presents, including in relation to the following questions:

What are the difficulties in speaking about common challenges when organisations are necessarily grounded in the particularity of their local contexts? In what ways are challenges interlinked and often underpinned by questions of funding? How might this Forum inform future conversations and strategies within the Triangle Network? Can it support the development of organisational and Network practices? What next?

Sofía Steinvorth是策展人、作家和研究员。她的实践从人文地理学、空间正义、身份政治和（后）殖民时代的知识生产借力。她拥有位于斯德哥尔摩的瑞典国立艺术与设计大学（Konstfack）的策展学位，以及里斯本天主教大学的文化研究硕士学位。她的硕士论文以三角网络为案例，并从艺术机构的角度讨论知识生产。2022年2月、3月，作为TURN2计划的一部分，她在南非Bag Factory担任驻场策展人。

Santiago Villanueva是在布宜诺斯艾利斯生活和工作的艺术家、策展人和艺术史家。他在La Ene（新力量当代艺术美术馆）领导扩展影响部，并担任国家艺术博物馆的一系列夜间艺术活动“美好周四”（Bellos Jueves）的策展人。他曾在MAMBA（布宜诺斯艾利斯现代艺术博物馆）的教育项目工作，在MALBA（布宜诺斯艾利斯拉丁美洲艺术博物馆）担任公共项目和教育策展人。目前，他是Segunda época杂志的编辑，也任教于国立艺术大学的策展研究系。

Pésimo Servicio（其意为“服务差劲”）集体由设计师、摄影师、平面和视觉艺术家组成。在2019年10月智利社会起义后，他们自发地走到一起，回应瓦尔帕莱索街头的现场。作为一个在公共空间进行视觉干预的平台，他们的作品以各种形式出现，从在建筑物上投影到制作印刷海报。

社会协同基金会（Social Synergy Foundation）的使命是帮助印度的中小型非营利组织保存和发展其无形（机构）资本。社会协同效应基金会采取深入整体的方式与非营利组织合作。它设计并执行一个组织长期的发展，逐渐塑造客户的整个决策过程。基金会的目的是使组织在成长、巩固、处理继任、资金不稳定和其他基础问题的过程中贴近其既定的使命、根基和精神。

Khoj是一个位于新德里的自主非营利性当代艺术组织。通过其项目，Khoj支持和孵化新兴、实验性和跨学科的创意实践和教学方法。自1997年成立以来，Khoj一直致力于建立全球网络和链接，尤其关注印度次大陆。

URRA是位于阿根廷布宜诺斯艾利斯的非营利性独立组织，致力于发展艺术家驻地、国际交流和其他艺术项目。URRA成立于2010年，旨在鼓励艺术创作、促进新的对话和合作，协助世界各地艺术人士间的信息和经验交流。URRA的项目生来就游牧四方，以租赁或接受赞助的方式在不同的地点和场所进行，时间有长有短。在过去的六年里，URRA在蒂格雷市驻扎，目前也在布宜诺斯艾利斯展开了新阶段。

重庆的器·Haus空间由独立空间“ORGAN器”和“家·M公社”共同发起于2007年，是一个专注于实验艺术的非营利艺术空间，常年组织国际艺术家驻地项目，为从事实验性综合媒介的青年艺术家提供交换工作室，定期举办各种展览。器·Haus空间依托中国的城市化社会环境，积极探讨“艺术-社会”方向的公共议题，鼓励艺术的独立表达和与真实社会的连接，并一直积极保持着同中国西南及国际艺术现场的交流互动。器·Haus空间与英国的Gasworks & Triangle Network、德国杜塞尔多夫市城市文化局、日本北九州的替代空间 Gallery Soap、伊朗德黑兰的 Kooshk 驻地、澳大利亚的 Asialink 等机构建立了长期合作的关系，近年愈发重视与亚洲国家的互访，2012年起参与的“亚洲酒店计划”力图通过在亚洲城市之间的行走搭建一个流动中的艺术网络。器·Haus空间近年的项目包括“亚洲酒店计划”在中国的首次全面展示“人造风景_亚洲酒店计划”，以及“共同生活-社会设计与艺术行动”、“地方 PLACE 2020/2022”、“Organhaus重庆-無名营造社Mume Design贵州黎平联合驻地”等。 

Rosie Hermon是一位策展人、研究者。自2018年底以来，她一直在与伦敦南岸大学的网络图像研究中心、皇家艺术学院的当代艺术策展项目和煤气厂空间（Gasworks）合作开展博士研究项目。在这项研究中，Rosie一直在通过对话和一系列线上会议和活动接触三角网络。

El Triangle Network Forum aborda algunos de los desafíos comunes que enfrentan los espacios de arte independientes y los colectivos de artistas en diferentes partes del mundo en la actualidad. A través de una serie de charlas y debates, el Foro público presenta nuevas voces e ideas que se suman a las conversaciones que han tenido lugar internamente en el Triangle Network durante los últimos años, en el marco de la investigación de doctorado de Rosie Hermon.

Los temas clave explorados incluyen: pensar desde una posición de precariedad, liderazgo y planificación de la sucesión, operar bajo censura y mantenimiento, así como el cuidado continuado de las organizaciones y sus estructuras. 

El jueves 21 y el viernes 22, los ponentes invitados abordarán estos temas, seguidos de una discusión plenaria con los socios del Triangle Network el sábado 23 de julio. Las sesiones se transmitirán en vivo a través del canal de YouTube de Triangle Network TV y estarán disponibles en inglés, español y chino mandarín.

Sostenibilidad – ¿Cómo podemos financiar programas cuando los muros de nuestras instituciones se están desmoronando?

En su Manifiesto para un Arte del Mantenimiento (1969), la artista Mierle Laderman Ukele  declaraba que "la cultura confiere un pésimo estatus a los trabajos de mantenimiento = salarios mínimos, amas de casa = sin paga". Para a continuación plantear esta pregunta: "Después de la revolución, ¿quién va a recoger la basura el lunes por la mañana?" Tomando estas cuestiones como punto de partida, Many Hands Make Light Work, un proyecto de mantenimiento curatorial de Sofia Steinvorth que se celebró en la Bag Factory entre abril y junio de este año, transfiere las preguntas de Ukele a la esfera institucional de las organizaciones de artes visuales y el Triangle Network. La pregunta sería: "¿Cómo podemos financiar programas cuando los muros de nuestras instituciones se están desmoronando?" Esta conversación girará en torno a las dificultades -por no decir imposibilidades- que abordamos al recaudar fondos para trabajos de mantenimiento, así como explorar estrategias para atender estas necesidades compartidas dentro de la red del Triangle Network.

Pensar desde la precariedad 

¿Cómo el pensamiento desde una posición de precariedad moldea nuestras perspectivas y estrategias? ¿Cómo negociar nuestras posiciones precarias, trabajando con y contra esas mismas condiciones de incertidumbre?

Esta sesión presenta distintas prácticas artísticas y organizativas, con el objetivo de iniciar una discusión en torno a lo que significa pensar desde una posición de precariedad. Tanto en relación con las prácticas compartidas como con las artes locales específicas y las ecologías sociopolíticas de los ponentes. Estos incluyen un curador con sede en Buenos Aires, una organización artística con sede en Santiago de Chile y un colectivo de artistas que han estado trabajando de manera receptiva al levantamiento social en Chile, con sede en Valparaíso.

Esta actividad se desarrollará en español con traducción en vivo al inglés – una grabación del evento con subtítulos en inglés y al mandarín estará disponible más adelante.

Liderazgo y planificación de la sucesión: ¿Cómo podemos desligarnos de nuestras organizaciones? ¿Cómo irnos de ellas?

¿Cómo pueden los responsables de una organización planificar su sucesión de manera efectiva, particularmente cuando la estructura organizativa y vida personal se han unido en la figura del fundador? ¿Cómo podemos pensar a través de procesos de transición organizativa para el fortalecimiento de nuestras organizaciones? A raíz de las conversaciones sobre la administración de las organizaciones celebradas en el marco del Triangle Network el año pasado, la Social Synergy Foundation compartirá su trabajo en lo que se refiere a apoyar organizaciones artísticas en procesos de sucesión. Esta actividad incluye trabajo con el director Pooja Sood, de la Asociación Internacional de Artistas de Khoj.

Operando bajo censura

Si tratamos de cartografiar las diferentes formas de censura que operan en el presente, así como discutir ejemplos específicos de censura dentro de la práctica institucional y artística, ¿cómo podemos comprender mejor las sutilezas en torno a las formas específicas que toma la censura en diferentes contextos, así como su naturaleza generalizada? ¿De qué modos se naturaliza la censura en el presente? ¿Es posible que las organizaciones artísticas se auto-censuren de forma inconsciente? ¿Hay algo así como un efecto dominó que regula estos comportamientos? ¿Cuál es el impacto que las prácticas locales tienen dentro del marco internacional cuando hablamos de censura? ¿Y cómo pueden los artistas y las instituciones abordar cuestiones difíciles en estas condiciones?

Al tratarse de un evento público que lidia con cuestiones delicadas, tengan en cuenta que los participantes en esta actividad puedan necesitar autocensurarse. Esta actividad se desarrollará en inglés con traducción simultánea al mandarín y al español.

Discusión plenaria del Triangle Network

Esta sesión plenaria presenta el trabajo del Triangle Network y algunas de las organizaciones que lo conforman. A través de una mesa redonda, los participantes reflexionarán sobre distintos modos de articular los desafíos que plantea el presente dentro de esta red, así como las oportunidades y dificultades que afrontan nuestras organizaciones en relación con las siguientes preguntas:

¿Cuáles son las dificultades que afrontamos para hablar de desafíos comunes cuando las organizaciones se basan necesariamente en la particularidad de sus contextos locales? ¿De qué manera los desafíos están interrelacionados y a menudo respaldados por cuestiones de financiación? ¿Cómo podría este foro dar forma a futuras conversaciones y estrategias dentro del Triangle Network? ¿Cómo podemos contribuir al desarrollo de prácticas organizativas en red? ¿Qué nos depara el futuro?
